Why this shape
The arch is doing the work.
A doorway is the oldest way of carrying a load: push it out to the sides and the middle can stay open. Lumina carries light the same way — the structure is at the edges, and what you look at is the gap.

The dome
Opal, lit from within. It is the only part that glows; everything under it is structure.

The brass band
Separates dome from body, and stops two materials meeting in a seam you would notice.

A doorway carries a wall by pushing the load out to its sides. Here the load is light.

Vertical channels catch light at a different angle to the flats, so the body reads as carved rather than moulded.
