Why this shape
A fold is a decision about light.
A smooth shade gives one brightness. A pleated one gives as many as it has folds — and that is the whole difference between a lamp you notice and a lamp you do not.
- 01
The rim
Holds the pleats open at the top. Without it the cone closes and the light only goes down.
- 02
The pleats
Each fold takes light at a different angle, so the shade is banded rather than evenly lit.
- 03
The foot
Wider than the top: light is thrown out and down, onto whatever the lamp is standing on.
- 04
The plinth
Square, under a round shade. The join is deliberate — two shapes are what make it read as made rather than turned.
